How does it happen?
It occurs naturally and randomly — it’s not caused by anything the parents did. Although the chance increases with the mother's age, most babies with Down syndrome are born to younger women.
How is it identified?
Doctors can notice some physical traits at birth and confirm it through a test called a karyotype. In some cases, it can be detected during pregnancy.
How common is it?
Globally, 1 in every 700 babies is born with Down syndrome. That means thousands of families across the world are raising beautiful, strong children with this condition. While Malawi lacks exact national figures, more awareness and better health services are helping to identify and support children with disabilities like Down syndrome.
Can people with Down syndrome thrive?
Yes! With love, support, proper healthcare, and inclusive education, they can go to school, get jobs, and live happy, productive lives.
How can we help as a community?
Learn and spread awareness
Be inclusive in schools and workplaces
Support families emotionally and practically
Advocate for disability-friendly policies
Let’s break the stigma and show love. Every child deserves a chance to shine — regardless of their abilities.
